JOE DRISCOLL
ORIGIN MYTHS
BUTTERCUTS

Rather amusingly, the liner for Joe Driscoll’s striking debut album states that ‘no session players, samplers, drum machines or kits were harmed in the making of this album’. That’s because Driscoll’s voice does all the work, making the hip hop beats and the half-sung, half-spoken vocal commentaries. Only the odd lazy guitar riff betrays the use of other instruments, as on the easy going ‘Nomad’, while Driscoll goes about an original take on freestyle rap and song, clashing styles to intriguing effect on ‘Just Us’, or offering an interesting documentary on the accompanying DVD. A set of rhymes that offer a breath of completely unpretentious fresh air.
