John Beltran makes serious chillout music, intricately constructed but definitely not disappearing up its own backside. The minimal loops of tracks like ‘Brilliant Flood’ are softly hypnotic and paint pictures of lights twinkling in the sky (maybe!), but Beltran takes care to apply his easy style to a range of beats from soft downtempo to more aggressive, breaks driven material. ‘Alive in 1985’ benefits from the faster, more aggressive approach, while ‘Here and Now’ charms with its softer breakbeat. Dreamy stuff – and rewarding under close inspection.
