John Newman – Revolve – (Island)

A second album from John Newman, already established as one of the go-to vocalists in recent British dance music. Here we get to take in more of the soulful side to his voice, although at times the heavy production of ‘Revolve’, which has an awful lot going on in the background at times, threatens to swamp the message. It doesn’t however stop good songs like ‘Come And Get It’ and ‘Tiring Game’ from making their mark, and the double act of Newman and Fatback Band singer Charlie Wilson is especially strong on the latter. Other strong tracks – ‘Lights Down’ and ‘All My Heart’ for instance – find Newman in powerful and emotive voice, while if you’re feeling flush you can plump for a deluxe version of the album which, as well as including the no.1 song ‘Blame’ with Calvin Harris, features a detailed book on the making of the album in LA. Newman wants to keep himself grounded throughout his career, and ‘Revolve’ shows that what he does best is singing emotively. When the production takes note of that, the results are impressive.
