Justice – ‘Audio, Video, Disco’ – (Ed Banger / Because)

You have to admire Justice for taking a risk or two. If you’ve heard the singles from their second album you’d be forgiven for thinking they are ploughing a similar furrow to the first, but one listen to ‘Audio, Video, Disco’ confirms this is not the case. For one thing they often operate at a slower tempo, which is disconcerting to start with when the guitar riffs don’t kick in with quite the same energy. As a result some of the earlier tracks on the album can drag a bit – but are rescued by tougher than tough guitar licks. When the tempo does get raised the results are thrilling – the title track, ‘Helix’ and ‘Civilization’ all great examples – and when it doesn’t the pair stick to their guns, throwing rock and dance influences together. Not always successful – but hardly short of entertainment.
