Smalltown Supersound

Opinion might well be divided on the debut album release from Timo Kaukolampi’s trio. Heavily under the influence of krautrock, it occupies the lower end of the frequency spectrum for most of the record, occasionally coming to life in the treble when there are vocals, as in the more glamorous ’18 Hours (Of Love)’. The atmospherics that are cast are largely effective, but often in the instrumentals it feels like a melodic element is missing, and it’s almost as if a riff or two has been left out or turned down. As a piece of mood music it’s fine enough – and doubtless sounds excellent in a club – but as home listening it can end up leaving its audience wanting a bit more.
