K-X-P ‘K-X-P II’ (MELODIC)

The second album from Finland trio K-X-P is, appropriately, twice as tough as the first. It’s a much more driven affair, much more rhythmic – and with two drummers sometimes pressed into action your neighbours will be left in no doubt when you’re listening to it! Clearly the trio have been listening to and enjoying a lot of Krautrock, but there is some no holds barred rock and dance here too, harnessed in a primal way that recalls the best of bands such as Holy Fuck and Midnight Juggernauts. There are songs here, too, and the dreamlike vocals on ‘In The Valley’ work really well with the atmospherics. Meanwhile the depth of drumming on ‘Flags And Crosses’ and especially ‘Easy – Infinity Waits’ is thrilling, while ‘Staring At The Moon’ carries all before it. The whole record is high on adrenaline, delivering a series of musical punches no one in their right mind will want to duck. The next thing to do is see them live!
