Katy B – Little Red – Columbia

Katy B’s second album confirms the talent revealed in the making of her first album ‘On A Mission’ wasn’t a passing phenomenon. Put simply, she can’t help writing great pop songs – but manages to build on that by making them sound like they’ve been written by someone who goes clubbing a lot, which essentially she still does. So these are three minute pictures of nights out with friends, relationships that form but then become strangely vulnerable, and the feelings that go with dancing at the end of the night / beginning of the morning when you’ve lost the whereabouts of said friends. To add to that, ‘Crying For No Reason’ is one of the most meaningful pop ballads written in recent years – if it is indeed a ballad, for a pretty storming rhythm kicks in soon after the start, a typical instance of great judgement on an album where almost all the production is really well pitched. Katy B is a real talent – in song writing and singing – but she makes it all the better through showing a vulnerable side in the album, which makes it feel like she’s one of us.
