This is Kel McKeown’s third album as Kelpe, and it takes him to a new level. Previously he has impressed with his mastery of electronic beats and sounds, but here his music has clearly progressed into a more tightly structured unit, without losing any of his tendency to seek out new timbres. Once again the scattered beats are hip hop influenced, but don’t always stay within those confines. To these he introduces some imaginative sounds, like the striking bell at the end of ‘Wind In The Windows’. ‘Microscope Contents’ unexpectedly throws out a four to the floor curveball, while ‘Gone Train Dreaming’ is also curious in the way it moves over a single drum stroke. These are typical of McKeown’s increased confidence with his material, which is both intriguing and charming.
