If you like what is loosely termed as ‘ambient’ music, but would rather like to step off the well trodden path, then Kelpe offers a refreshing alternative. The music Kel McKeown makes is effective as well-crafted background fodder, but it’s actually much more than that, with sharper synth bass lines that are unmistakeably meant to start a dance or two. Throughout McKeown revels in his influences, whether indulging in slightly jazzier harmonies or even offering a few hints of early rave music. This makes each track refreshingly unpredictable, revealing a few more secrets with each listen. Well worth stopping off to try.
