Korrupt Data – Korrupt Data – (Planet E)

On the face of it the Korrupt Data album feels like a bit of a publicity stunt – but when you realise Carl Craig and Planet E are behind the enterprise, that feeling goes away and is replaced by curiosity. Who could come up with what is ultimately an emotive techno album? Who could blend a softer, electro approach with the instinctive structure they do here? Well whoever has done it has given us some really good tracks such as a melancholic ‘Cryogene’, which opens the album, the edgy ‘Inter Arrival’ and then ‘Hex Theorem’, which seems to use a samba rhythm as its start point for some fiercely bubbling electronics. Finally ‘Drifting Vessels’ is a starry eyed piece of writing that brings a tear to the eye. So what’s my guess? An outside bet, given the label, but I’d say the Cybotron maestro himself, Juan Atkins. Either way it’s excellent.
