LCD SOUNDSYSTEM
THE SOUND OF SILVER
DFA/VIRGIN

If James Murphy’s first album as LCD Soundsystem wasn’t groundbreaking enough, this ups his game even more impressively. There’s now an assurance about his songwriting that will put many a band to shame – but at the same time the emphasis remains firmly on the dancefloor. You get that barely a minute into opening track ‘Get Innocuous’, with synth lines flying about the texture to a driving beat. The songs are deeply emotive at times, none more so than ‘Someone Great’ and ‘All My Friends’, while the title track even hints at the Human League before being claimed by a wonderful whoosh of ambient noise. Essential listening – and raising the bar once again.
