Was Word & Sound

Deep house music is surprisingly difficult to get right. To the casual ear it sounds like it’s easy to put together, but it’s so easy to come up with something superficial and dull. Lee Jones avoids those pitfalls, with an album that keeps it simple while maintaining a strongly rhythmic element, so that when softer pad sounds are dominating, there’s a sharper bassline that pinpricks through the texture. Each track is well structured and crafted, there are plenty of melodic hooks to hang on to, and for greater continuity Jones works best when segueing one track into the other. Not a groundbreaking record, but an extremely well made one.
