Lemonade
Sunday Best

Lemonade are a three piece outfit from Brooklyn, their self titled debut LP was released in the US at the tail end of last year through True Panther Records. It went on to cause more than a bit of a stir in quite a lot of places, including the HQ of those ever on it people at Sunday Best, who have decided to give “Lemonade” a well deserved UK release. The opening track is the acid house fuelled current single “Big Weekend”, with classic Chicago rhythms, Detroit synth riffs, wobbly spaced out vocals and plenty of hands in the air moments, all done with a double drop and a knowing nod to the days of a booming new movement Ecstasy Culture, and Lemonade have got it spot on, it does what it says on the tin. “Unreal” comes on like Public Image Limited at their best, big Jah Wobble dubby basslines, crashing beats, spiralling electronics and wailing lyrics “I ate some flowers that tasted of nothing”. I think John Lydon would be well chuffed. “Nasifon” takes a world music disco route, but still retains that PIL flavour. “Real Slime” is a bit like having your head trapped in a pinball machine, you know it’s coming but you don’t know when, a tension building assault on the senses. “Sunchips” turns the screws and continues the aural cold turkey battering. “Bliss Out” puts our feet back firmly on the dancefloor, as 4/4 beats slam head on into rolling funky breaks, icy tinkling piano and soaring majestic vocals. It’s all about the rush. The LP closes with a Delorean Remix of “Big Weekend”, and you feel like you’ve just watched the best film ever about the second summer of love, and your watching the credits roll, thinking that was brilliant, for once they got it bang on. Lemonade have made the “Metal Box” for the rave generation.
