Lewis Fautzi – The Gare – (SOMA)

Soma have always been a hotbed of new talent – they played a big part in the discovery of Daft Punk, after all! – and Lewis Fautzi is one of the very newest names on the block. One thing he definitely is not is a shrinking violet, for his productions are quick and uncompromising, confidently delivered and powerfully wrought. The stabbing synths of ‘Sick’ bear this out, as do the thumping kick drum and out of body atmospherics provided by ‘Hope’. The no nonsense track titles give a clue to Fautzi’s overall approach, as he strips back all the layers to concentrate on the building blocks of quick techno music. Minimal is definitely a word that applies to his riffs, which are often just the one note in a variety of rhythms, but he cultivates them in such a way that movement is guaranteed – especially when the more acidic, hard edged sounds kick in. Proof that Soma know a good producer when they see one.
