Marc Ashken’s debut artist album marks him out as a producer to keep an eye on, someone who can use the classic deep house/techno blueprint but bring something a little different to the table. I was reminded at times of Matthew Herbert’s ‘100lbs’ debut but this is perhaps even more subtle, and takes more time to get the maximum effect from its vocals, ‘Empty Room’ and ‘Root Rot’ cases in point. He can be more aggressive where required though, and ‘Loaf’ injects a sharp keyboard riff to proceedings. Well linked together, this is a clever album that keeps its eye on the dancefloor but has fun elsewhere too.
