It is surprisingly difficult to write good ambient music – I’ve tried often enough! – but Marconi Union have the effortless knack, and the six tracks making up their second volume of transmissions mould effortlessly into the foreground or background, whichever place you prefer them to sit in. Foreground listening – ideally on headphones – reveals layers of ambient noise, soft sound pictures with beats that pulse occasionally, and with lazy melodic loops that make themselves known to create enough forward energy. Background listening – well that’s ideal for the small hours, when the overall mood is blissful and reflective. Each transmission is a self-contained unit, but each one works with the others in the context of the album, which is beautifully realised here.
