Even with his big band in tow, Matthew Herbert continues to amaze with his sonic innovations, and the politically based ‘There’s Me And There’s You’ is no exception. One hundred people of power saying ‘Yes!’ is quite an impact on ‘The Yesness!’, as is the hundred separate words recorded and used on ‘Knowing’. Yet this album really gets going when the horns kick in, as in the powerful ‘The Story’, with which the album opens. Throughout the feeling is that Herbert is pushing an older big band style, but bringing it right up to date with contemporary issues and beats, not to mention fabulous vocals from Eska. It works handsomely.
