Apparently three comic characters bent on world disco domination, Mawkish
make their debut on DJ Spiller’s label in fine style. After kiddie story
intro, ‘Formula Futuro”s synth chords bowl in worthy of an early Madonna or
Janet Jackson single – happy, uplifting and cool before the early 80s New
York style boogie groove kicks in. Here in remix form by Spiller and fellow
label-mate Glitch it’s a dynamite way to get sucked onto their undulatingly
intoxicating dancefloor. ‘Baba’ starts as a glistening hallucino-glide
before the halfway piano riff boots it up a level. Finally, ‘No Shampoo’
puts the lid on Mawkish’s wonderful world of disco cheekiness and music
that, rarely, puts a big smile on both face and bottom.
