THE REPUBLIC OF DESIRE

All this ‘new-rave’ malarkey is only worth it if it leads NME readers back to the sources. Therefore, it’s spot-on timing for Northern mayhem-merchant Edzy to return with his first album since he went through the unhappy major label experience that befell so many young producers who suddenly found themselves with a Huge Tune 20 or so years ago. As the hub of Unique 3, Edzy released several records but ‘The Theme’ was the one which cracked it open, managing to define rave and the oncoming bleep scenes. Other stuff like 1990’s Jus’ Unique album helped pave the way for breaks and jungle. The big money deal with Virgin did him few favours but Edzy’s return is a hotbed which manages to evoke the past while bringing in modern production techniques and styles. From the vibrant techno of ‘Shades Of Grey’ through early 90s NYC house feel of ‘Tears In The Tracks’ to the fiery breaks of ‘Take This Love’, featuring vocals from Edzy’s sister Adele, it’s a riotous joyride. And you wouldn’t want to meet the pummelling rap vehicle ‘Serial Killer’ in a dark alley. Welcome back, mate.
