Cocoon

Stand by for another blue whale stiffie from the Cocoon as Malmo’s Sebastian Mullaert and Marcus Henriksson, already established in the forefront of 21st century techno, turn in their masterpiece. Spread across two CDs, it’s an incredible journey which, like the best electronic producers, really couldn’t have been by anybody else, such is the strength of vision and propulsive purpose peeking out of their sonic loin-cloths. Minimal would be too easy a label to pin on this panoramic album’s rectum, tracks recalling anything from pure techno’s first wave of the early 90s and classic deep house through space-jazz meanderings to indeed contemporary stripped down circuit-singeing. Although capable of dancefloor demolition [and those will be released on vinyl], the CD tracks which work best are luscious delights like ‘Feeling In Spring Beside the Dressing Table’ which manages to whip up a euphoric jazzy drone. At times they whip up a deeo and shadowy resonance which is like nothing on Earth, ending with stretches of pure beatless ambience. One of the year’s best albums which shows just far this music has come.
