Moiré – Shelter – (Ninja Tune)

Moiré’s first album is an accomplished piece of work, giving the impression he’s been around a lot longer than he actually has. That’s because it’s beautifully crafted and structured, setting out its vision with the hazy sounds and loping beats of ‘Attitude’, which set the mood. The track is deliberately slightly off the beat, dropping off the edge as though it’s a bit too lazy to dance in time. The double header of ‘Elite / Hands On’ ends up as a superb four to the floor cut, beefing up the lower end with some ever so subtle funk, a bit like an early Aphex Twin ambient work in techno clothing. Meanwhile ‘Stars’ wraps you up in its warmth, despite a keyboard loop that moves in unexpected directions – Moiré remaining original in his treatment of deeper techno. Offering some late summer fuzz, this is a rather beautiful piece of work.
