It’s the right time of year for a bit of sunny madness – so with that in mind, step forward the Mungolian Jetset. This is their first album proper, would you believe, which is a surprise when you consider the outfit have been around for five years, but it doesn’t sound like it took them much trouble to make it. The influence of George Clinton’s Parliament looms large, in the wide variety of styles the duo, Pål ‘Strangefruit’ Nyhus and producer Knut Sævik, cram into their music. We have some cracking hooks, a grandiose intro (‘2010 – A Space Woodysey’), and, as well as the Clinton references, some sly references to the likes of Steely Dan and ELO. It isn’t all about retro styling, however, and ‘We Are The Shining’ is a cracking modern disco anthem in the making – while cosmic humour abounds elsewhere, in the likes of ‘Moon Jocks ‘n’ Prog Rocks’. This is a vibrant album, good natured and full of musical tricks to make you smile. Buy it and witness it fend off the cold weather with its powers.
