Simon Aldred – normally of Cherry Ghost – is the man behind Out Cold, and his vision behind the project is to keep writing good songs while using more analogue equipment, which takes him quite a world away from his previous band’s more guitar-driven, Doves-y sound. He has come up with an impressive piece of work here, surrounding the well written material with some endearing analogue fuzz, even a few strings, and some pretty powerful beats. If ‘Murder Black Corvette’ is anything to go by he clearly enjoys a bit of 1980s electro-funk, but when he’s building on the elements of other styles he is always able to offer his own original take and sound. This is one of those records that reveals a bit more with each listen, so if you give ‘Invasion of Love’ a few spins I can guarantee you won’t regret it, and will be able to add eleven very carefully thought out songs to your electro-pop collection.
