The cut-up sonic experiments of Michael Hunter are something of a departure for Soma but fit well with the label’s ever-questing spirit. His 2-CD debut kicks off with the title track’s manual-style intro, before taking off a collage of hiphop beats, orchestral soundscapes, mischievous space missions and unique works like ‘The Story of Sampling’ unravelling a string of names and spot-the-voice bites to stunning effect. CD2 is more instrumental, wafting through cinematic mood pieces, space-jazz and further out experiments. Sometimes it recalls the mischief of late 80s Coldcut, treating the sampler as a new world of its own resulting in a bold, individual statement.
