The debut from Richard Sen and Neil Beatnik is an affair steeped in post-punk New York sounds, with disco and darker basslines colliding somewhere near Arthur Russell’s studio. The duo keep an edgier analogue sound, so there’s often a steely glint to the basslines, as in ‘Faces Of The Forest’, which adds some fractured saxophone lines on top. ‘Triple X Syndrome’ parades a funky, wobbly bass, while ‘Konkorde Lafayette’ could almost have been bottled in the 1980s, its trumpet and bass reminiscent of The Clash’s ‘Magnificent Dance’. However this is much more than a derivative sound the band push, an inventive spin on past glories that sits nicely as a slightly more introspective alternative to bands like The Rapture.
