Poliça – United Crushers – (Memphis Industries)

A third album for Poliça – and it continues to develop their template of electro pop with a darker slant, headed by Channy Leaneagh’s ever-distinctive vocals. They prove to be both a blessing and a curse, for though they have a creamy texture there are times – whole songs, even – where it is almost impossible to work out the words she might be singing. It’s a mark of the musical quality, then, that songs like ‘Lime Habit’ and ‘Someway’ shine through, the former with its crunchy synth sounds and the latter using a clever off beat method. ‘Wedding’, too, is intriguing, especially given the lyrics that deal with police aggression. Elsewhere Leaneagh’s attention turns to the end of a relationship – or so it would seem, through those lyrics that are clearly audible at least! Although that might seem like a deal breaker I wouldn’t let it stop you buying the record, as there is some fine music to be had!
