Rodney Smith returns with his fourth album, a homage to the era of Channel One and Studio One, a sound he loved well before hip hop. It’s a very personal record – as you would expect – and it’s one that finds our hero continuing not to be swayed by popular trends and clichŽs. His lyrics are so inventive, and so entertaining, that even a fifth listen reveals new couplets and insights. Toddla T and Metronomy helped on the production for some tracks – the former’s ‘Buff Nuff’ assistance hugely entertaining, while the latter adds subtly emotional touches to ‘Let The Spirit’, one of the rapper’s finest tracks to date and something of an anthem. The whole album, though, is hugely affirming, and not a bit of it sounds processed.
