New Nashville is a term being used to describe a certain number of bands and artists that have got something a bit special going on in the country music capital, and spear heading this new movement is How I Became The Bomb. Their debut mini album ‘Let’s Go!’ is seven cuts of slightly kooky and quirky pop, that’s got a certain post punk, new wave, early indie feel. ‘Minute Romance’ gets HIBTB off to a firin‚ start, teenage love song lyrics and big rifftastic pop sensibilities, riding on jerky rhythms made for idiot dancing. ‘Killing Machine’ is up next, a jolly jape with a cynical take on the alpha male bully. ‘Fat Girls Talkin‚ Bout Cardio’ comes over like Devo doing a Buddy Holly number, and ‘Secret Identity’ doffs a cap to The Cure with country licks and hobby horse keyboards. ‘Bar Song’ & ‘Robo’, the excellent double whammy of a single are both here, bathing in all their slightly caustic glory. ‘Kneel Before Zod’ marches ‘Let’s Go!’ on military rhythms to a head held high close. How I Became The Bomb are a blast. Don’t miss out.
