Saint Etienne
Tiger Bay / Finisterre Special Editions
Heavenly / Universal

While there is a fashion for a bout of mass re-releasing, even where 1990s albums are concerned, Saint Etienne are among the most deserving of this treatment. Part of the reason is their low profile modesty, the band seemingly content to play their music for the fans and for themselves rather than for commercial gain, but also because their B-sides stand up to repeated listening just as well as the album tracks. Tiger Bay is a fine summer album, strongly Balearic in character, and songs like ‘Pale Movie’, ‘Urban Clearway’ and ‘Hug My Soul’ tug at the heartstrings in a very positive way. Finisterre is more intimate, an affectionate portrait of London with short commentaries as interludes and moving lyrics that bring forward the best and worst of the capital city. Both editions have ample second discs, with ‘Primrose Hill’ and ‘White Dress’ two standouts to go with Finisterre, and ‘You Know I’ll Miss You When I’ve Gone’ one of the Tiger Bay gems. Picking out individual songs, however, is a tough job given Sarah Cracknell’s beautifully poised vocals throughout. Still one our wilfully understated musical treasures.
