SOUL MEKANIK
EIGHTY ONE
RIP

Having excelled in remix duties for Silicone Soul and Max Sedgley among others, Soul Mekanik get the chance to impress with their debut album for RIP. As it turns out their name and title perfectly describe the music – mechanical soul with feeling, harking back to the 80s but forward looking in its electronic funk. ‘Wanna Get Wet’ is the obvious crossover for its hip swinging rhythms, but vocal tracks such as ‘High On Hope Street’ offer a good contrast. The quasi-robotic style recalls Kraftwerk, but has enough individuality to make the brothers’ album a winning start.
