St. Vincent – St. Vincent – Caroline International

St. Vincent isn’t really the sort of artist you would expect to get coverage on these web pages, but she’s added a real rhythmic punch to her music of late, and because of that the dancefloor beckons! This self-titled album – her fourth – builds on last year’s collaboration album with David Byrne, ‘Love This Giant’, and with that added confidence under her belt she is able to strut her stuff to some incredibly catchy tracks such as ‘Rattlesnake’, ‘Digital Witness’ and ‘Psycopath’. Countering these are more emotive songs like ‘Prince Johnny’, ‘I Prefer Your Love’, with its swooning massed strings and the big room closer ‘Severed Cross Fingers’. Overall, though, the arrangements and rhythm tracks hammer out dancefloor friendly grooves that have their fair share of influences – Siouxsie & The Banshees among them – to forge a new and exciting path for the singer, who is right at the top of her game here.
