Steve Reid Ensemble
Daxaar
Domino

Steve Reid decamped to Senegal to record his latest album, though tragedy nearly struck when his drums fell off the boat taking him there! Yet the jazz drummer has recorded something pretty special with his ensemble here, and regular collaborator Keiran Hebden is present again with electronic dressings. The results are hypnotic, particularly in the case of the title track, and though the improvisation is extravagant at times, it’s always tasteful, whether from Jimi Mbaye on guitar or Boris Netsvetaev on keyboards. A strong 70s feel infuses the music, with jazz the predominant style but glimpses of hazy rock often visible. A strong dash of colour to warm up the winter.
