THE LOTTERBOYS
ANIMALIA
ESKIMO

You never know what to expect from Eskimo. Usually, it’s a weird but wonderful compilation. Here, it’s a full-on artist album marking a collaboration between Terranova’s Fetisch and Shapemod with Mack Goudy Jr, aka Paris The Black Fu of the Detroit Grand Poobahs. At first, the funk-meets-post-punk grooves topped with near-operesque P-Funk-style vocal acrobatics of previous single ‘Starwhores’ comes as a jolt but, once settled in, the album takes on a life of its own and becomes a quite delirious journey. On the way, there’s even a deranged cover teamup with Princess Superstar on Black Sabbath’s ‘Iron Man’! After the brass-stabbed vamp of ‘Blazer’, they sail through a string of gems – the ghostly chant of  ‘Can’t Control The Boogie’, low-slung and sinister ‘Involvement’, Link Wray voodoo vibe of the title track, eventually getting to the Clinton-fried punk punkscapes of ‘Superdope’ and ‘Get Down Syndrome’, before ‘Wired And Tired’ thrashes out No New York style, acting out its bugle-based lyrics. Disco, electro, P-Funk and punk all jostle and kick each other. The result is a strangely charming little mutant bent on exposing itself to all and sundry. Free your ass and your mind will follow.
