The Shortwave Set’s debut album ‘The Debt Collection’ was made with all sorts of instruments, many of them purchased from charity shops. This time the budget’s a bit higher, with Danger Mouse, Van Dyke Parks and John Cale involved in the making. Where the first album was charming and quite wispy, ‘Replica Sun Machine’ struts out with more confidence and, thanks to Parks, some nicely applied strings. Production throughout is excellent, and most of the songs are potential singles – ‘Now Till ’69’ and ‘House Of Lies’ are especially good though, showing how the trio can make summery pop but tarnish it round the edges with shades of darkness. Repeated listens confirm this as a standout album, well worth acquiring.
