She’s been away for a long stretch, but it’s time to welcome Tracey Thorn back from her maternity leave. Her instantly recognisable voice continues to lend itself perfectly to electronically-derived music, in this case the subtly colourful production techniques employed by Ewan Pearson, with Thorn’s other carefully chosen producers including Cagedbaby, Vector Lovers and Charles Webster. Pearson’s best achievement is the magnificently brooding ‘A-Z’ and the more housey beats of ‘Get Around To It’, while throughout Thorn wrings every last bit of emotion from her intimate lyrics, written and recorded at home. Twenty four years on from her last solo outing, this is one of our very best vocalists in top form.
