There is activity afoot in the UR camp and this consolidatory double CD set puts the cap on it. It’s basically highlights from the series which started with ‘Nation 2 Nation 2 Nation’, went through ‘World 2 World’ and then hit ‘Galaxy 2 Galaxy’, plus some extra items worth the price of admission alone. highlights are too many to list. The scope, soul and sheer inter-galactic soul of ‘Mad’ Mike and friends cutting loose on track after track of sweeping space-jam techno is jaw-droppingly great. The thing that stands out most is the inherent funk and nods to the grand traditions of black music – which could be surprising for an operation so rooted in the future. Items like the gospel-based ‘First Galactic Baptist Church’ highlight this fact. Another welcome addition is ‘Momma’s Basement’, which sees Mike cutting loose on guitar on a funk jam with his mates. P-Funk and techno both hail from Detroit. Never was this more apparent. A slice of techno history and unbeatably essential.
