Ewan Pearson freely admits to being nervous before the release of his third commercial mix CD, partly because of the pedigree Kompakt have in this field, and also because his previous two were so well received. He needn’t have worried, as ‘We Are Proud Of Our Choices’ is a sublime 70 minute set of deep house with techno leanings and bags of personality. To start with it seems as if Pearson is feeling his way round in the dark, but when the music begins to settle with RMNVN’s ‘Uno’ everything falls into place. Pearson takes his time to build tension based around one note, then releasing it with a shift to another. He is helped along the way by some considerable production talent, especially the bottomless Kink & Neville Watson collaboration ‘Full Flight’ and the outstanding double act of Yosa’s ‘Margaret’ and Gregor Tresher’s ‘The Life Wire’, remixed by Petar Dundov. If there’s a better house music mix around in the last few months I daresay I’ll be biting your hand off to get it! Excellent stuff.
