Walls – Urals – (Ecstatic)

This will be the last Walls album – which is a shame, but also a realisation from Sam Willis and Alessio Natalizia that there is plenty more music they want to make. Where 2011’s ‘Coracle’ was quite a dreamy affair, this one is much sharper in tone. ‘I Can’t Give You Anything But Love’, for instance, has a groove, a sharp acidic tang to its synthesizers and a cutting bass, an approach ‘Moon Eye’ also taps into. The easier and airier moments are still there too though, in the shape of ‘Altai’ and ‘Radiance’, the album a nice blend of the two emotional extremes. If there is more of a Krautrock influence here it is taken on hand with plenty of originality to spare, the end result a very satisfying end to the duo’s trilogy.
