The Xploding Plastix Wikipedia entry describes them as ‘playing Electrofunk/Big Beat music with elements of jazz’. To tell the truth that’s only half the story on ‘Treated Timber’, their third studio album, as they use an impressive array of percussion instruments to achieve a totally unique sound. This is best heard in the album’s tour de force, ‘The Cost Of Resistance’ – a powerful track that makes the most of tuned, bell-like sounds before a big boned rhythm crashes in. ‘Bulldozer Butterfly’, meanwhile, has all manner of icy pizzicato string figures flying around, while ‘A Rogue Friend Is A Wild Beast’ further illustrates their versatility with its scattered beats.
