Yes indeed, one of the year’s less easy to pronounce albums just happens to be among the best. For a start it’s on Prins Thomas’ label which, following the amazing debut from Blackbelt Andersen, guarantees some degree of quality but Norwegian duo Marius Vareid and JarieBrathen, whose group name translates into Outer Space Dance School, have emerged with a sound which is truly different and unique to themselves. They describe it as ‘deep sea diving-tropical island/cosmic/space/contemporary disco’, and that does save me a few head-scratching moments trying to describe the delights on offer, but the secret of wonderful outings like ‘Haraball’ and ‘Kahluha Madness’ seems to be their way of echoing blissful classic house ingredients and bathing them in a warm, shimmering glow, occasionally spiking with hallucinogens and making sure the melodies on tracks like ‘Afterski’ are simply beautiful. Ultimately, this secret is what will make this music progress: being able to translate personality and original ideas while putting the music on a level with the ultimate high. Utterly recommended.
