This is an incredibly obvious thing to say, but Krautrock doesn’t half go on a bit sometimes! That’s true for music descended from it as well, which is the category Ziguri fall into, the trio made up of Günter Schickert, Udo Erdenreich and Dieter Kölsch. What redeems them is their ability to vary the sounds and loops that they use, enough to make the music more interesting and give it a stronger sense of momentum. It’s percussive and heavy, especially in songs like ‘Massa’ – heavy in the sense that it sounds like someone with lead boots is giving the drum kit a pounding. Here Ziguri have the added ammunition of a hard hitting riff, which helps them over the line – but that luxury isn’t always available, in which case it works to enjoy the textures and lines as they chug inevitably onwards. So this is a far from subtle album, but it is undeniably driving and powerful.
