If you have not yet encountered the cool electronica of Austra, the release of ‘Future Politics’ means you can put that to rights immediately. Not only do the Canadians have a slick production and beats, they have a vocalist and songs that set them high above the competition. Said singer is flame haired Katie Stelmanis, and her penetrating tones bring a thrilling edge to the songs that stops the listener dead in their tracks. Hers is an incredibly versatile voice, from the high, floated tones of ‘I’m A Monster’ to the more direct approach of ‘I Love You More Than You Love Yourself’ and ‘Future Politics’. On ‘Gaia’ the harmonies are beautifully wrought, while the closing trio of ‘Beyond A Mortal’, ‘Deep Thought’ and ‘43’ show a cooler, downtempo side that really complements the edgy pop. Stelmanis’ voice won’t be for everyone, but it is an incredible instrument and meets its match on Austra’s best album yet.
