DOGTOWN CLASH
VELOUR BROTHERS/DRUM MONKEYS EP
WESTWAY

The new label started by Dub Pistol Barry Ashworth and DJ-writer Carl Loben  ‘named in homage to The Clash) uncorks a mighty second release. Side A features the Velour Brothers’ ‘White Room’ and its throbbing live NY boogie bassline with vocals far back and twisted. The Dogtown Clash remix brings up the breaks on a groove not unlike The Clash’s ‘Train In Vain’ with spikey vocal. Both have the space and attitude of early 80s post-punk funk. The flip sees Drum Monkey’s ‘Electro Ladyland’ riding a Siouxsie and the Banshees-style bassline with more tough breaks and bursts of wah-wah which sounds suspiciously like Mr Hendrix. The Klaus ‘Heavyweight’ Hill remix gets more intense with sheets of feedback adding to the assault. Yeah, there are reference points – especially punk, but when it started to get adventurous and embrace the funk. Riotous stuff.
