Portugal’s soulful House don Carlos Vargas has been quiet for too long in my opinion and I’m really glad Mark di Meo’s Soulstice label is ready to release his new EP.
‘House Your Jazz’ is a masterpiece from second one till the very last tone. As a classical educated piano player, Carlos all does it by himself: composition, production, vocal arrangements and instruments, and you won’t disagree this man is a genius. The title track features the lovely vocals from Nicole Mitchell, who jumps from spoken word to classic vocal performance, which together with the jazzy backing makes this song quite memorable. ‘Deep Expressions’ however is more loungey and features a terrific sax workout from Gabriel Neves that will blow your mind. Finally ‘Speaking in Chords’ is a wonderful guitar driven piano tune with nice percussion, that deserves to be described as classy Jazz House. Glad you’re back, Carlos!
