A-SKILLZ
EXPORT 02
FINGER LICKIN’

When A-Skillz was born, hiphop was just entering its early 80s prime after years of kicking off at the block parties and uptown NY underground clubs. But you’d think he’d been there at the start going on this glorious celebration of hiphop and its DJ culture. Like all good parties, it flows and every new incoming track could be greeted with a huge cheer. The grooves are that deadly. Every cut, scratch and rhyming entry is timed for maximum impact and it reminds me of the old Red Alert mastermix shows on NY’s KISS FM from over 20 years ago. A constant barrage of delirious hiphop pressure shot with modern technological advancements and today’s breaks production. His own tunes like ‘The Funky Drummer’ and ‘Mooger Frooger’ and remixes like the Plump DJs’ ‘Funk Hits The Fan’ pop, scratch and funk bringing in guest slots from the likes of the Jungle Brothers, TC Islam and Kurtis Blow. The old school block party vibe has rarely been so well replicated in modern times. A breath of fresh air incredibly based on a sound that’s nearly 30 years old. Yes yes y’all.
