The launch of the new ‘DJ’ series on Global Underground brings the ever-promising Nic Fanciulli into the spotlight for its first release. The aim of the series is to showcase some influences as well as current production efforts, so as you might expect these two mixes are a clever fusion of slightly older and brand, spanking new. Perhaps surprisingly the start of CD1 is quite soft, a little jazzy even, but it soon toughens up. Covering a wide scope of sounds in its journey, it speeds up through a strong progression of house before ending with a cool breaks track, Pangaea’s ‘Router’. Meanwhile the second disc sets off with more purpose, thanks to Rolando’s ‘The Afterlife’ and Photek’s ‘Glamourama’, with Fanciulli again showing a pleasing willingness to take in more styles and sounds. Certainly, ending with Kenny Larkin’s ‘Cirque De Soul’ proves something of a masterstroke – and caps a good start to what should be an interesting and inventive series.
