Let’s Go Outside
Conversations With My Imaginary Friends

Feel like a gnat’s scrotum as somehow this long-awaited master-work managed to slip through the net – and it happens to be one of the albums of the year! Let’s Go Outside is Mr Stephen Schiebel from Portland, Oregon, who’s already caused a major commotion with his A Picnic With The Hunters debut and now follows through with a further mutation of his inimitable twisted takes on so many electronic styles that the sound that belches from his abused circuits can really be compared to nobody else. The album is packed with razored effects, pummelling beats, darkly unhinged vocal outings and stretches of pastoral calm [like the extra-terrestrial guitar themes of ‘AmiciInvisibili’]. ‘I See You Dancing’ is a slinky back-passage floor-maggot along the lines ‘I’ll Lick Your Spine’ while ‘Let Us Prey’ squirts deep house juju. Every track a different style but recognisable as another extension of Stephen’s malevolent sonic intestines. ‘Sunday Morning In The Church Of Bass’ – apart from being the track title of the year – is as relentlessly cathartic as it sounds. Ultimately, the overall effect is beautiful and certainly the most brilliantly-challenging album Soma have released this year.
