Following on from previous successful modern soul compilations with a city-based theme, Adrian Gibson turns his focus on London. What makes this volume particularly enjoyable is the recognition that soul is a broad church, much removed from the traditional image of over-weight crooners in shiny outfits with bad haircuts. This represents the sound of soul as it is today, whether working in broken beat, R&B, hip-hop, house or somewhere inbetween. Artists include Omar feat Angie Stone, Terrie Walker, 4Hero, The Sunburst Band, Alice Russell, Don-E, Bugz In The Attic, NSM, creating their own vision and speaking with their own voices. Its music made with obvious passion, and Mr Gibson could surely, and justifiably, put out dozens more similar volumes under the London Soul guise. A seriously worthwhile compilation, put it to the top of your shopping list.
