The latest instalment in the “Kings Of..” series lands at the feet of the beast that is electro, and as always, the expert compiler’s – Playgroup (Trevor Jackson) and Alter Ego (Roman Flugel & Joern Elling Wuttke) – really don’t need an introduction. Jackson digs deep, kicking things of with experimental 80’s duo Chris & Cosey, moving easily into mid 80’s NY classics like Just Ice, Original Concept, and Whodini, Miami and West Coast flavours with Dynamix II and Unknown DJ, via Chicago, Detroit and Sheffield with Mr & Mrs Dale, Model 500 and Energize and more well-known classics like Hashim and Visage. It’s an excellent selection, in terms of the classics included, and the ease with which they sit together. Alter Ego’s selection moves on a decade, precision mixing highlighting classics from Maurizio, Daniel Bell, Chicken Lips, Low Res, Robert Hood, the superb Dopplereffekt, Galaxy to Galaxy and Plastikman. There is one curious inclusion on their choice, namely Azzido Da Bass, which must surely be long dead of over-exposure, even today. Overall though, a fantastically put together package that – mostly – manages to avoid the obvious without losing it’s way. Electro freaks report to the dancefloor please…
