Various Artists – Bang Mixed By Terry Hunter – BBE

A lot of Chicago house mixes concentrate on the bumpier early sound of the city, so it’s nice to report that Terry Hunter finds a smooth and pretty soulful undercurrent to the start of this excellent mix. Setting the mood with some sultry grooves like Hunter’s mix of Timmy Regisford and Tiger Wilson’s ‘Sometimes’, it means he can flex his muscles later on – which he does accordingly with Mike Dunn’s moody track ‘Rise’. By the time we get to Hunter’s collaboration with vocalist Carla Prather (‘Just Do It’) the effective house music roll call of Wayne Williams ‘There Is A Place’ and the cracking DJ Spen cut ‘Craze At Midnite’, inhibitions have been well and truly cast aside. ‘Bang’, based on Hunter’s residency at the city’s Shrine club, is one of those mixes that you can play over and over, because it is so well proportioned and features some good, original choices. One of BBE’s more recent triumphs, for sure!
